Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Motor Insurance

What is Excess?
An excess is the portion of a claim you pay out of pocket. It represents your contribution to the repair or replacement cost.
Example:
Your car sustains damage worth Ksh80,000. If your policy has an excess of Ksh20,000, you pay that amount, and the insurer pays the remaining Ksh60,000.

Variations in Excess
Some policies have multiple types of excess (standard, theft, young driver, etc.)
It’s important to read your policy and ask your advisor for clarification.

Excess Protector
For a small additional premium, an excess protector helps cover or eliminate your out-of-pocket expense in the event of a claim.

Personal Accident Cover
Comprehensive insurance often excludes injuries to the driver and their immediate family.
Solution
Add a Personal Accident cover to protect yourself and loved ones in case of injury or death resulting from an accident.

I’ve Been Involved in an Accident – What Should I Do?
If you're involved in a road accident, follow these steps promptly and calmly:
Check for Injuries
Ensure you and any passengers or other road users are safe. Seek immediate medical attention if anyone is injured.
Do Not Admit Liability
Avoid making statements that may be interpreted as accepting responsibility before the facts are established.
Call the Police
Notify the traffic police and ensure an officer attends the scene. Obtain an officially filled Police Abstract Report.
Notify Your Insurance Advisor or Underwriter
Contact your insurance provider or financial advisor as soon as possible to report the incident.
Move the Vehicle to a Secure Location
If it’s safe to do so, move your vehicle to a secure area or an authorised repair garage to prevent further damage or loss.
Complete a Motor Accident Claim Form
Fill in and submit the motor accident claim form to your underwriter, along with any required supporting documents.

Why Might My Insurance Claim Be Rejected?
Understanding the common reasons a claim may be declined can help you avoid costly mistakes. Your insurer may reject a compensation claim under the following circumstances:
Driving Under the Influence
If the driver involved in the accident was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time, the claim may be denied.
Unqualified Driver
If the person driving the vehicle is not licensed to operate it—or does not hold a valid licence for the specific class of vehicle—the claim is likely to be rejected.
Lapsed Insurance Cover
If your insurance policy was not active at the time of the accident (i.e., it had expired or was unpaid), the insurer is under no obligation to honour the claim.
Unroadworthy Vehicle
If the vehicle is found to have been in an unroadworthy condition (e.g. faulty brakes, worn tyres, no lights), the claim may be declined due to breach of policy conditions.
Misuse of the Vehicle
Using the vehicle for a different purpose than what is stated in the insurance policy—such as operating a privately insured vehicle for commercial purposes like ride-hailing or taxi services—can lead to claim denial.
